The management of patients presenting with acute endodontic disease has been dramatically changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This presentation will consider the challenges and how they can be addressed.
Topics covered will include:
dentine-pulp complex and development of pulpal inflammation in endodontic disease;
associated endodontic presentations as the inflammatory process progresses;
evidenced-based analgesic and antibiotic management of endodontic disease during the pandemic;
a proposed protocol for emergency endodontic treatment and management of aerosol; and
post-covid management of deep caries and pulpitis using vital pulp therapy as a potential means of avoiding root canal treatment.
On completion participants should understand:
the protocol for treating acute endodontic disease;
associated risk management procedures; and
post-pandemic endodontic management of deep caries by preserving pulp vitality using pulp therapy.

John qualified from Kings College London in 1990, where he was awarded the Claudius Ash prize in Conservation and the Jose Souyave Endodontic prize. He continued his postgraduate education at Guy's Hospital London where he achieved a Distinction in the Endodontic MSc. He completed his Specialist training at The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh with MRD in Endodontics. John was awarded Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Edinburgh 2013. John is registered on the GDC Specialist list in Endodontics and now runs a busy Endodontic referral practice in Poole, Dorset.
John lectures throughout the UK and contributes widely to postgraduate Endodontic teaching. He has published research papers in several refereed journals and numerous articles for dental press. He is co-author of the Endodontic textbook Endodontics: Problem Solving in Clinical Practice, Author of Advanced Endodontics: Re-treatment and Surgery and contributing Author in Harty's Endodontics in Clinical Practice.
John is a referee for the International Endodontic Journal and ENDO (Endodontic Practice Today).
He currently provides endodontic content for The Dental Channel and runs the Dorset Endo Study Group from the practice.
